Well I'm as cynical as they come when I'm judging the Mets. However, after a 9-1 home stand, I might be ready yo believe.
The problem with the Mets as we all know has been the pitching. But with the resurgence of Mike Pelfrey along with Johan Santana gives the Mets a nice one-two punch in the rotation.
Jason Bay and David Wright are also getting into mid-season form, with Bay getting his first home-run as a Met against the Dodgers and Wright had mulitple hit games in the last two games played.
However, I still have my doubts including having Jose Reyes in the three hole. Now the Mets have been winning with him there, but to me Angel Pagan batting lead-off is a significant downgrade. The top of the lineup should have Reyes there. Maybe also consider Ike Davis as a number two hitter followed byt David Wright, Jason Bay, and Jeff Francouer.
What do you think of the Mets season so far and do you think the lineup should be changed?

Three of a Kind

Gary cohen, Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez. Together, they are what most consider the best broadcasting team in baseball.
The trio is funny, insightful, opinionated, and are not afraid to say it like it is. Hernandez has even gone after star short stop for the Mets Jose Reyes, which led to a heated argument on the teams plane. But at the end of the day, Darling knows that they are respected by the fans.
"Yeah, after some of the things we say we're not always welcomed with open arms in the Mets clubhouse," Darling said. "But you know what? Keith and I had a lot of success here. We don't have to hide or tiptoe around."
Darling and Hernandez are both emmy award-winning broadcasters for their great work in the booth, and along with the great play calling and knowledge of Gary Cohen, it is hard to find a better team.
Not only are these guys big in the booth but also as actors. Ron Darling had a cameo appearance in the movie Shallow Hal, and more famously, Keith Hernandex had a guest spot in an episode of Seinfeld as Elaine's boyfriend.
The three guys are now bigger then ever having their own website called garykeithandron.com. There is also Gary Keith and Ron day one day a year at Citi Field.
The great broadcast is also one thing that Met fans can say is better then the Yankees. Michael Kay is known for is over dramtic play calling making everything seem bigger then it really is, and radio announcer John Sterling tries to be creative but goes over the top. There is even a blog about how much Sterling stinks.
So we may not know how the Mets will play every night, but what we do know is that it will be a well broadcasted game.

Things You Can Do in Seven Hours

After 20 innings it was finally over. The game lasted six hours and 53 minutes, which got me thinking, what can you do in seven hours?
Well here's what you can do:
-Watch 14 episodes of The Office
-Fly from Miami to Vancouver
-Get a good night sleep
-Take your six hour driving test to get your permit (with an extra hour)
-Drive from New Jersey to North Carolina
-Cook a 16 pound turkey for a family of four
-Seven hours of community service
-Have a night out with the guys
-Watch the Mets vs. Cardinals again
Seven hours is a long time to watch a baseball game. And while it may of been fun, I hope it never happens again.

New Season....Same Problem

The Mets have gotten off to a slow start this season mostly due to poor pitching performances. Pitching seemed to be the main problem last year and this year looks no different. For three years now Johan Santana has carried the pitching staff with no help. Pitchers John Maine, Mike Pelfrey and Oliver Perez have followed Santana with their results getting worse instead of better year after year.
Last night aganist The Rockies, Maine allowed eight earned runs in just three innings. Which is just more proof that the Mets should of pursued harder for free agent pitcher John Lackey. In fact, it did not even have to be Lackey, just anyone new to get the fans excited. If Santana is not on the mound, the fans know that there is a good chance that they are going to go home to another Mets defeat.
Not only are the fans thinking it, but by now the players have to be thinking it as well. The moment the first few runs come in the Mets have that here we go again attitude and seem to mail it in. The team needs some new blood in the starting rotation to get the fans and players fired up. When Carlos Beltran is healthy in a few months maybe the Mets can trade Gary Mattews Jr. for a starting pitcher or some new prospects. Whatever it is I'm all for it!
Maine may lose his spot in the rotation, but do you also want to see Perez or Pelfrey go too? Any pitcher you think the Mets can make a move for?

On the Wright Track

The Mets won their opening day game againist the Flordia Marlins 7-1 sparked by a two-run homer by David Wright in the bottom of the first.
The main problem going into this season seems to be the pitching rotation behind Johan Santana. But another problem I have was the power struggle last year of David Wright. Collectively, the Mets struggled with the long ball, but David Wright only hitting ten home runs, well that's just not right (Yes, pun intended).
Wright, who only had ten home runs last season, showed Mets fans in spring training that he looked like he was back to his old self hitting five home runs in just 20 games. What was even better to see was that he hit an opposite field home run. Wright was struggling with power last year but to me it was the lack of opposite field power that was bothering me. Now the new park may of had something to do with that. However, it looks like he has adapted to the new stadium and hopefully will continue with another successful season.
Opening Day with a Mets Victory, can't ask for much more. What were your thoughts on the game? Will David Wright hit 30 homers again? And is me, or are the Mets announcers the greatest ever.

Line Up Projection

With the 2010 baseball season less then three weeks away, it's time to look at the start of the season and see what we should expect this year. Today I will be looking at the Mets lineup which should look something like this:
Left Field
The Mets added all-star Jason Bay to the roster to replace the aging Gary Sheffield. This move should help the Mets tremendously. Sheffield was a bad pick-up from the start and Bay will provide much needed power back into the lineup. Also, with the departure of Carlos Delgado, Bay will fit in his spot in the lineup.
Center Field
Carlos Beltran will once again be the starter for the Mets. However, he will miss the first month of the season after off-season knee surgery. Angel Pagan or Gary Matthews jr. will provide as nice replacements but the Mets will need a healthy Beltran if they want to contend.
Right Field
Jeff Francoer will have his full season as a Met after joining the team midway through last year. With evryone healthy, the Mets will not have to rely on Francoer to be their power hitter.
Third Base
David Wright will try and improve on his numbers from last year. He only hit ten home runs last season which was a dramatic drop from his total of 30 from two years ago. Expect Wright to improve on that this year.
Short Stop
Jose Reyes will miss the beginning of the season with his thyroid imbalance after missing over 100 games last year due to a torn hamstring and we can only pray that his legs will hold up this year.
Second Base
Luis Castillo......not much to say about him.
(Plus I'm still mad at him)
First Base
Daniel Murphy looks like the replacement for Carlos Delgado. Murphy struggled last year after a great rookie season and will need to improve his game if he wants to keep his job from prospect Ike Davis.
Catcher
By far this is the Mets weakest position. I orginally thought that Omir Santos would do the cathcing but I was informed from a comment on this blog that Rod Barajas will be handling the catching this year. Either way, I'm not a fan of what we have. Josh Thole is a prospect that the Mets hope will blossom into a all-star but we will have to wait and see.
Starting Pitchers
Besides for Johan Santana the Mets have no one they can count on and say we know we will get a good game out of him. Behind Santana are: Oliver Perez, John Maine, Mike Pelfrey and a battle for the 5th spot between John Niese and Nelson Figueroa.
Projected Lineup:
(After everyone is healthy and also what I want)
1. Jose Reyes
2. Luis Castillo
3. Carlos Beltran
4. David Wright
5. Jason Bay
6. Jeff Francoer
7. Daniel Murphy
8. Omir Santos/Rod Barajas
9. Johan Santana
What are your thoughts on the Mets lineup for this year? Do you like my lineup or do you prefer something different?

Opening Day Headache

We are less then four weeks away from opening day and already the Mets seem behind. Carlos Beltran will miss the first month of the season after his off-season knee surgery. Now Jose Reyes will most likely be out for the opener aganist the Flordia Marlins because of his thyroid. Two starters out already for the Mets and we haven't even started real games yet. Let's just hope we can recover this time and actually contend at least into the summer months.
The injuries and the constant losing is starting to take its toll on Mets fans as well as myself. But Like I always say, being part of the Mets is like a 24 hour headache (Just ask David Wright). The only problem with this headache is that the only medication is victory. So it Sounds like my head is going to be hurting for a while.
Now I know I seem pestimistic, but can you blame me. But year after year it's high hopes followed by high disaster. Am I the only one who feels this way? Do you think the Mets will have a successful season?

Deja Vu

Here we go again!
Last season was filled with injuries for the New York Mets. This year isn't starting any better.
Jose Reyes will be heading to New York to get retested for a thyroid imbalance. A test taken Thursday showed that Reyes has a hyperactive thyroid and won't be able to return to the lineup until the results are shown which should come on Wednesday.
Reyes only played in 36 games last season before he tore his hamstring and had surgery during the offseason. However, this is much more concerning to the young shortstop. "I have to be concerned about it and find out what's going on. This is important. We're not talking about my leg. We're talking about my health, so I have to be concerned about it. It can be dangerous for me," Reyes said.
We all hope that Reyes is fine but if he's not, and has to sit out along with Carlos Beltran in the begining of the season, this could be a bad case of deja vu!
Oh, one more thing, I think the movie Groundhog Day is a reference to the Mets.

Davis Shines in Opener

Spring training couldn't have started any better for Ike Davis and the Mets with their 4-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves. Most starters for the Mets were scheduled to start, but due to the wet field conditions Mets Manager Jerry Manuel decided to sit the starters and go with the bench. "When it rains like that and wind and the forecast is this and that, I just feel it wasn't necessary to do," Manuel said.
This gave young prospect Ike Davis a chance to shine and he took advantage of his early playing time. Davis went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. An added bonus for Davis and the Mets is that he plays first base which is a position still up in the air for the future after the departure of Carlos Delgado.
Daniel Murphy will play first base for the Mets this season even though he is not a natural first baseman. Fernando Tatis (who plays multiple positions) is the back up first baseman. If Davis can continue to have strong performences, he might see himself in a Mets uniform this year.

Spring Training starts for New York Mets and Nick Evans
Watching ESPN the other day I realized something snuck up on me. Spring training starts next week! This got me as excited as my dog gets when she needs a bath. Spring training may be a bore, but as a Mets fan it's a good excuse to help forget last season. With the injury plagued season for the Mets along with a Yankees vs. Philles World Series, there wasn't enough sleeping pills in the world to help me sleep at night. But enough about the past lets look in the future.
The Mets signed Jason Bay to replace Carlos Delgado and should previde some extra offensive power that was lacking last year. The starting pitching remains basically the same with Johan Santana and four other pitchers still looking for a breakout season. Today though my spotlight is on one player.
Nick Evans.
Evans has been with the Mets for the last two seasons with multiple stints in the majors, but has spent the majority of his career in the minors. Spring training is where he needs to prove again to the Mets that he belongs with the team. However, I don't care if hes good enough to be on the team. I just want him on the team so I can see that petrified look on his face every time he is at the plate. He always looks like he just crapped his pants and that always puts a smile on my face. I need Nick Evans on the Mets as much as Tiger Woods needs Las Vegas strippers.
Now it's time to watch and see how the Mets and Nick Evans look during their first game on March 2 versus the Atlanta Braves.
